Reser/Fusion Ride Schedule

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Between Reser Bicycle Outfitters and our spin-studio neighbors upstairs, Fusion Studio, there’s a group ride every day of the week except Friday and Sunday.

MONDAY
After the brutal start of another work week, the Fusion Studio, “No Brainer” ride is a great way to blow off some steam. The ride has two different start points for convenience. Depending on how brutal the start of the work week was, each ride covers approximately 30 miles. Show up at the Ludlow VFW/Knights of Columbus at 6:15PM or the Anderson Ferry at 6:30PM, ready to ride. Be sure to come with your bike lights on; it will be getting dark when we roll back in.

If Mother Nature has different expectations for the evening, we can all huddle inside Fusion Studio for a spin class to make up for the missed ride. Spin classes are $12 for non-members and Coach Karen (coachkmart@gmail.com) will know by 3PM if the ride will be canceled. She’s also a great source of more info or motivation (if you need some coaxing).

Also, don’t forget to set aside some extra time on the 4th Monday of each month because, weather permitting, we swing by the Ludlow-Bromley Yacht Club for post-ride steak and bike talk.

TUESDAY
Show up at the shop, lights on and ready to ride no later than 6:15PM for Reser Bicycle Outfitter’s “No one left behind” ride.

This ride is divided based upon skill, conditioning and desire. Typical rides are 25 – 35 miles and roll back into the shop just about the time the street lights come on. Whether you are rolling on a Huffy BMX or a BMC ProMachine, we’d love to see you come out with us!

If it’s nasty out, bring your ride inside; Fusion Studio hooks us up with $12 spinning classes so we can still get our ride on despite what Mother Nature has planned.

WEDNESDAY
Want to step it up a notch? Then the Fusion/Reser Velo Club, team-only ride is for you. Contact Brandon Tuley (BLTuley@gmail.com) to find out more about how to join the club and the benefits of being a card-carrying member.

THURSDAY
It’s time to put the “mount” back in “Mountain Bike” as we get out and get aggressive. Sometimes we leave from the shop and other times we meet at an awesome trailhead. To find out what’s up, call the shop or check out the calendar on the homepage of our web site.

FRIDAY
We take Friday off in order to spend time pursuing the finer things not on two wheels (as if there are any…).

SATURDAY
Back at it again and ready to roll, Fusion Studio hosts a two-group ride which starts at Reser Bicycle Outfitters at 10AM.

“Coach Michael” (michrider@hotmail.com) leads the “casual” version of the ride across the Purple People Bridge, out Eastern Avenue, and around the Lunken Bike Trail. On the way home, there is a planned stop at the best little coffee shop on the East Side, the Fuel Stop.

It’s a laid back, flat ride designed for causal and beginner riders who just want to get on it and go. For more info, drop Coach Michael a line.

A more advanced ride, designed to cover a bit more ground and push the individual riders just a bit harder, sets out at the same time. Sorry, no coffee on this ride…

SUNDAY
Life gets in the way so, Sunday we take the day off to put our world in order so that we can hit the road again on Monday evening.

Whether you ride them all, pick just one or find your own path, just get on and go!

Taking the Grocery Getter Out For a Cruise

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

By Bob Yoder

Now, that both of my local Krogers have bike racks that means no more having to lock my bike up to a trash can, bench or cart corral when I go get groceries!

Since it was warm today, I thought make my inaugural bike shopping trip to the Newport Kroger Market Place.

I was a little worried about going down 10th Street, especially over the bridge between Monroe and Park.

Well, it was a breeze. 10th St. is surprisingly wide with plenty of room for a bike to ride in traffic. The only slightly difficult part was making the turn from Monroe to 10th St. Just have a little patience and wait for a break in traffic. (Note to the KYTC – How about striping 10th St. with a bike lane, and putting a traffic light at 10th St. and Monroe St.)

But, once you get going on 10th Street is smooth sailing. A quick turn on to Pavilion Parkway and into the parking lot to tie up at the bike rack on the south end of Kroger Marketplace. (One piece of advice, keep your eyes on the cars parked on the south side of 10th Street. I don’t want anyone to get doored.)

This trip gave me my first chance to try out my Axiom Hunter Grocery Bag Panniers. (Available at Reser Bicycle Outfitters)

The panniers worked great, pretty easy to put on and take off my rear rack. The panniers come with straps and handles so you can carry them in the store. I just hooked them on the sides of my shopping cart and got down to shopping for Sunday dinner. (Mahi Mahi with a Mango Cucumber Relish)

One nice thing about being able to bring the panniers into the store with you is you don’t have to worry about buying too much and having trouble getting it to fit in your basket. When the panniers are full, you’re done shopping.

The ride home was a even easier. It seems to be downhill the whole way. I hardly had to pedal.

So, if you haven’t done it yet. Leave the car at home and make your next trip to the Kroger Marketplace on your bike.

Mark Your Calendars: Tweed Ride – November 7

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

tweed-ride_flyer

Inspired by the Tweed Run in London and similar rides in San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, Newport is throwing its own woolen cap into the ring by hosting an inaugural

Tweed Ride on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. The ride departs at 2:00 p.m. from the Reser Bicycle Outfitters/Fusion Studio Building at 648 Monmouth Street in downtown Newport.

A leisurely six-mile course will take riders through the fair streets of Newport, Covington and Cincinnati in the most dapper attire followed by friendly banter, nibbles and libations at Claddagh Irish Pub at Newport on the Levee.

Riders are asked to leave their Lycra at home and dress in British period pieces. Organizers will make awards for the best costumes, and a suggested $5 donation helps fund bike racks in city parks. Possible attired includes woolen plus fours, tweed jackets, ties, flat caps, merino team jerseys, knitted jumpers, etc.

Need help putting your outfit together visit Newport’s Costume Gallery at 638 Monmouth St. (859) 655-9419.

Update: Soapboxmedia.com just came out with a great article on the Tweed Ride and Bike Newport.
