Submited by the Northern Kentucky Health Department
WALK and ROLL’s goal is to increase positive interactions and healthy habits through walking and biking. So, put on your walking shoes, tune up your bicycle and get moving!
Purpose:
This campaign was specifically developed for urban communities to:
- Increase physical activity among residents
- Promote healthy youth development through positive modeling and constructive interactions with adults
- Promote and educate residents on bike and pedestrian awareness and safety
- Encourage local businesses to support biking and walking
Community Activities:
During the Walk and Roll Challenge, there will be various classes/workshops and other activities to encourage and support your efforts to become more physically active and to help build assets among young people in your life and community.
Some of these activities include workshops on bike maintenance and repair, bike and pedestrian safety skills, how to bike safely in traffic, and asset building in the community.
In addition, you can choose to join in on the road rides (bike rides through Northern Kentucky) that are held every Tuesday evening at Reser Bicycle Shop in Newport!

Building Assets Through Physical Activity
Physical activity, such as walking and biking, helps you stay healthy and build the 40 Developmental Assets. The developmental assets help to connect people in the community and are the building blocks needed for raising a caring and successful young person.
Research shows that the more assets young people have, the more likely they are to grow up to be caring and responsible adults, and the less likely they are to take part in risky behaviors.
Physical activity is one way to build the assets of youth, which in turn helps the overall health of the community.
As a parent, you can ensure that your child makes good use of his/her time and is involved in activities that help to build assets.
Here are some ways you can start building your child’s assets through physical activity:
- Take a walk with your family after dinner instead of watching TV.
- Plan a family fun night with activities that everyone can enjoy, like Frisbee or a bike ride.
- Help your child find positive ways to use his/her creative energy, such as a dance or martial arts class.
Building assets with your child can be fun. So, grab your walking shoes or bike and start making a positive difference in the lives of your children and the youth in the community today!
